When Is the Best Time to Book a Cruise?

The month-by-month pattern

This calendar describes when to book, not when to sail — cruise pricing runs on a booking-window cycle rather than a simple calendar-month cycle like most items on this site. "Wave season," January through March, is the one clearly named, widely corroborated exception: major lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, and Princess launch their biggest promotions of the year during this window — reduced deposits, free perks like drink packages or onboard credit — specifically to fill cabins for sailings happening later in the year.

How far ahead to book

Outside of wave season itself, the general advice across booking guides is to book six to twelve months ahead of your sailing date for the best balance of price and cabin selection, extending to twelve to twenty-four months out for new ships, luxury lines, or high-demand sailings where early-bird pricing is the lowest it will get.

Booking very close to departure — inside about ninety days, sometimes as little as two to four weeks out — can also produce deep last-minute discounts as lines try to fill unsold cabins, though with less choice of cabin type and itinerary, and often pricier last-minute airfare to the departure port.

The muddled middle

Sources genuinely disagree on which specific window is worst. One major site names the three-to-six-month-out mark as the weakest point — after early-bird pricing has ended but before last-minute deals appear. Another names a sixty-to-one-hundred-twenty-day "dead zone" instead. A dedicated cruise-review site puts it plainly: there's no single rule that holds across every line and itinerary. Wave season is the one piece of this calendar with real consensus behind it — it's not a guess, it's a named, scheduled promotional period that cruise lines themselves publicize. Everything past that gets less certain fast: the "best" advance-booking window shifts by line, ship, and itinerary, and the disagreement over the worst window described above is real, not glossed over. Treat January through March as the one reliable signal here, and compare actual fares for your specific sailing and cabin type before assuming any other rule of thumb applies to your trip.
