When is clothing cheapest?

At the end of the season it belongs to, not at the start. Winter clothing bottoms out from January into early February; summer clothing bottoms out in July and August. Both windows exist for the same reason: the store needs the rail for the next collection, and the markdown is what buys the space.

Why do new collections cost full price?

Because arrival is when demand is highest and supply is fresh. New seasonal lines land in the spring and autumn changeover months, and nothing on a full rail is under pressure to move. Buying a coat in October and buying the same coat in January are two different transactions.

Do coats and shoes follow the same calendar?

Not quite. Winter coats reward waiting into deep clearance, when the risk is that your size is gone rather than that the price is high. Shoes are the exception in this category: how long a specific model has been on the market matters more than the month, though January clearance, back-to-school week and Black Friday still cut across everything.

Is a sale price the same as a good price?

Only if you check it against the same item earlier in its life. End-of-season clearance is genuine because the store is clearing stock, but a mid-season promotion on a current-season item is usually a smaller cut off a higher starting point. The test is the item's own price history, not the size of the percentage on the tag.
